Privacy Policy

FaceMap ("we", "us") operates the FaceMap mobile app and website at facemap.co. This policy explains what we collect, why we collect it, and the choices you have. FaceMap is a campus social product: it shows who is nearby while you use the app, and helps you connect with people from your college.

1. Information we collect

Account & profile

• Phone number (for OTP sign-in)
• Profile details you provide: name, age, gender, degree, year, username, profile photo, and optional Instagram handle
• Account identifiers used to keep you signed in

Location

• Approximate or precise location only while the FaceMap app is open (foreground), so we can show campus and city presence. We do not request background location.

Contacts

• If you allow contacts access, we process contact information to find people you already know who are on FaceMap (for example via hashed phone matching). We do not use your address book to message your contacts outside FaceMap.

Messages & social activity

• Chat messages you send and receive
• Friend requests, unlocks, invites, and related in-app activity

Device & notifications

• Push notification tokens (so we can deliver alerts such as messages or friend activity)
• Basic device / app information needed to run and secure the service

Diagnostics & analytics

• Crash and error reports (for example via Sentry) to fix bugs. We aim to limit personal data in these reports.
• Product analytics (for example via Mixpanel) such as onboarding steps and feature usage. We design analytics so sensitive fields like phone numbers, GPS coordinates, contact names, and Instagram handles are not sent as event properties.
• Session replay may record on-screen activity in the app to improve product quality. Do not enter sensitive information you would not want captured in product tooling.

3. Who can see your information & how FaceMap is run

We never sell your personal information. We do not rent, trade, or give it to data brokers, advertisers, or unrelated companies for their own marketing.

FaceMap is a social product, so some information is visible to other users inside the app when you use features like profiles, presence, unlocks, and chat — only as the product is designed to work.

To operate FaceMap we use trusted, established platforms that host our servers and provide the services the app needs (for example authentication and database, photo storage/CDN, push notifications, analytics, and crash reporting). Those platforms process data only to run FaceMap for us — they are not given your data to sell, market, or use for their own unrelated products. If the law requires disclosure, or we must act to protect FaceMap or our users, we will comply as required.

4. Retention

We keep account and profile data while your account is active. If you request deletion, we process removal of personal data associated with your account subject to legal retention needs (for example fraud prevention or dispute records) and backups that expire on a rolling schedule.

5. Your choices & rights

• Update profile information in the app
• Deny or revoke OS permissions (location, contacts, notifications, photos)
• Request account deletion in the app, or follow facemap.co/delete-account

6. Children

FaceMap is intended for college students and adults. It is not directed at children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your region). If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we will take appropriate action.

7. International processing

We may process data on servers in India and other countries where our providers operate. By using FaceMap you understand your information may be transferred to those locations.

8. Changes

We may update this policy. We will post the new version on this page and update the "Last updated" date. Continued use after changes means you accept the updated policy.
